Parents and carers play a VITAL role in developing safe and responsible online behaviours, and school and children’s services should work with them to raise awareness of e-safety issues and risks.

Through this approach, parents and carers can help to reinforce the e- safety messages delivered elsewhere, and encourage positive behaviour wherever, and whenever, their children go online. The BIG QUESTION is, as a parent, do you know what your child is doing ON-LINE? Do you know what WEB-SITES your child accesses? Do you know what games your child is playing online or who they might be communicating with?

The rapid change and advances in technology mean we have to be vigilant with regards how children are using technology. For instance, if your child has a mobile phone or access to a mobile phone, do you really know what it is being used for (social media, games etc.)?

Important for Parents - Nintendo Switch Hack

Nintendo have confirmed a data breach (see HERE) which means that over 160,000 accounts have had their details stolen, some of these accounts have already been used to make illegal purchases. Nintendo have stated they will contact affected users, but I would recommend you send this information out to parents as they will likely trust you more:

  1. Log in to your Switch account and change the password, remember to use a good, strong password.
  2. Enable 2-factor authentication. This means if somebody tries to user your login details, you will get a code sent to your phone, so you know that somebody is trying to log in.
  3. Go to the HaveIBeenPawned website (HERE) and put in your username/email address to see if any accounts have been hacked.

NewHouse Party Guidance -  Houseparty is an app which has reached number 1 in the downloads charts at the moment as it allows several people to video call and chat at the same time and also play games and quizzes against each other (hence why the downloads have rocketed). Parents need to be aware that without disabling certain features anyone locally can enter your “house” and become part of your video call whether you are friends with them or not - see full details here
